Refugees see Canada Learning Bond as First Step in Land of Opportunity
The Scarborough Housing Help Centre is a registered non-profit agency whose mandate is to help people to access and maintain affordable and safe market rent accommodation. Since 2011, SHHC has been a member agency of the United Way of York Region and has helped newcomers to Canada settle and access habitable and appropriate housing in the Region of York.
The SHHC works with many refugees, and tries to help ensure that they have a good foundation for future successes. When it comes to the Canada Learning Bond, we hear many refugees say similar things:
- Refugee families are very happy and excited to know this program will offer their children a chance for a better life.
- They all say the CLB makes them worry less about their children’s future.
- New refugees consider RESPs as something that gives them peace of mind as their children’s educational money will grow gradually in their account until the time they will need to start university or college.
Refugees are mostly surprised that there is such a thing as the Canada Learning Bond in their new home country. They consider it as a first important step to take in the land of opportunity they believe Canada to be.
