TDSB Launches SmartSAVER Campaign

News Release.
The Toronto District School Board is the first school board in Canada to partner with SmartSAVER on a board-wide campaign to help eligible families access free money for their children’s future education.

Research shows that even a small amount of education savings can improve student achievement, well-being, equity of opportunity and outcomes. Through this campaign, the TDSB can help an estimated 50,000 students access as much as $100 million in free education money through the federal government’s Canada Learning Bond.

Eligible families are encouraged to apply for the Canada Learning Bond and open a no-fee, no contribution required Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) through SmartSAVER’s safe and secure online application available at www.tdsb.on.ca/SmartSAVER.

Quick Facts

  • The Canada Learning Bond is a kick-start government contribution into the RESP of a child born since 2004 whose family has received the National Child Benefit Supplement. The Canada Learning Bond provides up to $2,000 in savings for the post-secondary education of eligible children.
  • For each successful Canada Learning Bond application generated by the TDSB, SmartSAVER will donate $25 to the TDSB to be used for technology in the classroom.

“Whether it’s an apprenticeship or trade school, college or university, saving for your children’s education now will make a big difference when they graduate high school and look to take that next step.”
– John Malloy, Director of Education, TDSB

“We know that saving for your child’s post-secondary education can be challenging. That’s why this new partnership with SmartSAVER is so important and can help families get a head start.”
– Robin Pilkey, Chair, TDSB

“Most students make up their minds about continuing their education well before they reach Grade 12. Having savings for their education helps build students’ educational ambitions and makes them more affordable.”
– May Wong, Executive Director, Omega Foundation
